I Just got fed up with this mission and decided to have some fun. I ran directly from the Spawn to the the downed pilots, hiding from the gunship and taking out a few stragglers, straight into the pilots then told them to meet me at the LZ and they went all the way there i ran the wrong way to start with but got their eventually and completed the mission on hardcore :P
Edit:: ive just done it again to prove it aint a fluke XD. Just run upto the First Humvee, pick up the M4 marksman, take out the first few guys, then tab straight towards the pilots, make sure you HIDE when the gunship comes over. Watch out cause there are sometimes a group of 3 strolling around. Get to the village. Get your breath back then run in, hold RB select the pilots, should be group 5, then tell them to MOVE FAST to the extraction and it should be a sprint all the way there

it was kind of funny when me and friends played that mission, we got got there, one of the pilots got killed and the other pilot wouldn't listen to us so I thought it might be because of the APCs, so i tried to throw grenades at it but it killed me and I instead of being able to view what the others were doing I was flying over the sea until the flying camera reached the island and flew to my body and when i was back in the body I died again from nothing and it stated me over the sea again. this happened three times total, my friends found me hovering in the air staying in place while I was viewing the sea. they tried to kill me but my body wouldn't die, I never was able to them out i was to busy flying and dieing, my friends pushed the pilot all the way to extraction point and he just ran back, they were mad, but the best glitch evere FTW!

i just replayed the mission. this time everything worked out well(exept the fact that the heli blew up my humvee and killed all my AI mates so basically i did all the pilot rescuing on my own, but who cares ;-).
almost halfway through hardcore :woop:

:wtf
been tryn for three f_ _ _ ing hours to get to the pilots but the assault helis keep killing me. I dont remember them being this bad on normal. is there a shoulder sam i can get somewhere or other suggestions would be awesome.
Edit: for those of u in hardcore and keep getting your ass kicked by the choppers head to area with humvees clear out the area and high tail it to the aa site undetected neutralize the site(and for some reason the choppers will disappear except for 2 transport choppers which i will mention in a few) and head back to the area where you picked up the humvee and then head east by way of the extraction site(area with big ass communication tower) to the site where you rescue the pilots. when you come up on the south side of the site leave a cat in the humvee gunning as soon as u rescue the pilots and exit the building tell everyone to follow u and high tail it south to the extraction site and switch to your rocket launcher keep moving to the extraction site and a transport chopper will come in wait for it to hover before it lands and blow it to hell keeping moving to the extraction site now on 1 attempt of this the small friendly attack chopper destroyed the apc that appears about 25 m north of the first transport chopper and another time it didnt but you should have 3 rockets left so if you have to deal with the apc youll be set. if you have to fight the apc it will come into the area right about the same time as the next chopper so you may get lucky and not have to fight it or you may not, any case deal with the apc first if you have to(may take 2 shots dont know why) and then deal with the other chopper as mentioned above(wait for the hover and then f_ _k it up). I promise this method will save much headache and the pilots will move flawless to the extraction point.

Yeah the helicopter is the problem I'm having, it just insta-kills you without any warning from right over the other side of the battle zone, it's a f*ing joke.
It's not like it's even realistic, cannons on attack helicopters do not have that much accuracy at that range, spotting a target amongst trees even with thermal vision from that distance is not something current attack helicopters can do.
If they're going to try and make the game realistic, they could at least try and make it realistic.
What's annoying is the helicopter was no problem at all yesterday for about 8 run throughs of this level, and just as I got the pilots etc. and died to normal troops and had to start again suddenly the attack helicopter becomes stupidly overpowered so that I can't even get past the AA site bit without it destroying me instantly from nowhere.

pmsl... Ofcourse a current chopper can detect a heat-signal from a mere 400m away and most definitely shoot your head off. Even worse/better; the Apache (which ain't that new) has a M230 gun with an accurate range of 1500m (about a mile) and a total range of 4500m (or about 2.5miles). And with that kinda range, you can safely assume that any sensors (heat or whatever) are at least capable of zooming & detecting you.
You want realism? That would mean the chopper would be able to see & kill you from anywhere in its circular path; not just when approaching you. But as soon as your teammates say "attack chopper, SE", lie down and wait for it to disappear from your hearing-distance. After that, you can cover about 300m running over open ground before it returns again.

It's not 400m it hits you from, it's 1.5km it keeps hitting me at.
Even at maximum effective range, it's only effect vs. large targets, certainly not a prone human. I suppose if you let off every round available you'd stand a damn good chance of hitting a small target like that of course, but the helicopters in game are letting off a salvo of like only 3 rounds and getting perfect accuracy every time. This doesn't happen in real life. By that kind of distance a lot of velocity has dropped off and the rounds become a lot more prone to wind and turbulence- this is especially the case on something like the M230 with rounds that size. You'd need to pretty much be firing in a vacuum for maximum accuracy at that range on the types of cannon and with the types of ammunition attack helicopters carry. They're certainly not built for high end long range sniping type accuracy as is portrayed by the helicopters in this game.
What you describe is how it was working for me at first, but now sometimes my team mates don't give warning, other times they give warning of about 1.5km and it still fires at that range just taking out my squad in a single salvo. I don't know why it's doing this when it wasn't doing it originally, it's rediculous but it does it every single time now.

Managed it in the end, just kept well West only moving East when I had to and ensuring there was always a hill between me and the helicopter nearly all the time.
Moved up to take the AA site out from the side, kept the hummer as transport all through the mission, but left it out the way each time I went in to assault something. When AA is down helicopter goes away, so from there I just edged forward bit by bit, sniping each enemy encampment from a distance before finally driving the hummer to the back of the house where pilots were, going in, pulling them out the back then just running everyone to extraction. Just did everything slow and at very long range.
