Stupid Question....If only gamefly shipped the books!

OK, got it in from gamefly, and I can't for the life of my figure out how to select all the ships at once. Thanx for the help in advance!

You are supposed to use the D-pad but hold the direction of a ship then press A.

So say you wanted the left and right ships:

Hold D-pad left, then press A.
Hold D-pad right, then press A.

It worked on the first mission, but after that I haven't been able to do it.
