"Microsoft Game Studios and Realtime Worlds announced today that Crackdown has gone gold. Realtime Worlds’ key staff has a tremendous history of creating some of the world’s most innovative and best-selling video games. The development team was hand-picked by David Jones, founder of DMA Design Ltd. and the designer and creator of more than 15 hit titles including Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto. Below is the press release with the announcement:

Criminals on High Alert as “Crackdown” Goes Gold

Pacific City notes a dramatic increase in crime as the city’s gangs prepare for the ultimate “Crackdown,” exploding onto store shelves and Xbox Live on Feb. 20.

Microsoft Game Studios today announced that the highly anticipated action title “Crackdown™” has gone gold. From developer Realtime Worlds and the mind of acclaimed creator Dave Jones, “Crackdown” is poised to raid retail throughout North America on Feb. 20.

Boasting an immersive — and highly explosive — three-dimensional world in which players can rain down justice from rooftop to road, “Crackdown” offers gamers the opportunity to take down the gangs of Pacific City in a massive, single-player campaign or with a friend over the title’s cooperative mode via Xbox Live®.

“The excitement for ‘Crackdown’ is evident through the significant number of pre-orders and affirms the continued Xbox 360™ momentum in 2007,” said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing in the Interactive Entertainment Business Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft Corp.

Those gamers anxious to get an early glimpse at the title will be able to enjoy the “Crackdown” demo available through Xbox Live Marketplace this month. And, as previously announced, “Crackdown” fans will be offered a special bonus with the purchase of each specially marked copy: access to the coveted “Halo® 3” multiplayer beta program.*

From Realtime Worlds, “Crackdown” pushes the action-driving hybrid genre into the next generation with the first ever truly 3-D playground. Gamers will level up their Agent’s strength, agility, firearms, explosives and driving skills while scaling the fully vertical world of “Crackdown.” This M-rated game incorporates revolutionary co-op gameplay throughout the entire freeform campaign. Creating a volatile cocktail of judicial oppression, players will clean up the streets of a truly interactive world when ”Crackdown” hits store shelves at an estimated retail price of $59.99."

Stupid Person Alert:

So there have been a few games (Gears, Oblivion, and now Crackdown) that have gone Gold before launch. Does this mean they have gotten a lot of pre-orders or what. I have no clue what this really means. I know platinum means 1 million sales, just dont know what this is all about.

Help this poor mans soul...

LOL, for something to go gold means that it's been officially finished. They use that term because they actually use gold to make the copies. Gone gold = finished.

Actually .. the disks aren't 'gold' as in the element .. they just have a 'gold' finish (like commercial CDs/DVDs have a 'silver' finish).

'Burned' CD's/DVD's use a lazer to turn the colored medium inside the disk (usually green/blue for CDs and Purple for DVDs) into 'dark' and 'light' spots to represent data. If you burn a disk 1/2way, you can turn it over and see the ring representing the burned section.

When you're mass replicating CDs/DVDs (Data or otherwise), you take them to a replication center that houses a 'clean room' .. where they actually press the DVDs and create the pits/grooves to signify all the billions of 1's and 0's that represent the data. Think of it like making waffles, or printing money (if you've ever seen a movie that involves conterfeit money making, the plates used to print the cash are gold-colored).

The original plates used to 'master' the replicated copies have a gold-colored finish thus the 'gone gold' terminology. They don't actually use real gold usually, because it's a very soft metal .. but it is resistant to corrosion. In the old days they almost always used gold to master disks (especially music CDs in the 90s) but now it's just a holdover term from the old days.

Long-winded explanation from a former Video Production 1st Assistant.

does it mean that the games just done? or that the game will have a lil bit of gold on it?? i always thought it ment the game was done, but from that you make it sound as if the game will have a lil bit of gold on it?
