Well I just received my Garruk Wildspeaker promo card and along with it came a flyer stating that you can receive '2 Free Sample Decks' as long as you show the flyer to a participating Wizards Play Network.

My question: has anyone done this yet? If so, what were the sample decks you got?

I'm asking this because the closest participating WPN is about 20-30min away, and I don't want to waste my time and gas if the decks are not even worth it.

Thanks.

You have 5 decks to choose from, one from each color. They are meant as a portal into the card game, and thus they don't have any rare cards just a few uncommons and loads of commons. Most of the cards you will find in the xla game. If you have a lot of the new cards then I would say "don't bother", for me who stopped playing during 'Invasion' it was nifty to get some new free cards =P

Looks like I'm going to pick these up since I stopped playing years ago so I don't have any of the new cards.

I got a trial pack (blue) along with the promo card. No note saying about extra free decks, just a standard letter saying "heres your card and trial deck". Maybe it differs per territory??

I believe the trial-pack you are talking about is the free deck ;)

Did it come in a slim box with about 30-40ish cards and a leaflet with rules?

Those sound like the mono color decks that you can get with each new 'edition' (6th, 7th, 8th, etc...) 45 card decks meant to be used as launching pads for better decks. They won't stand up to a constructed deck or even one of the precons you can buy for each new set, but against each other they aren't a bad introduction to the game.

True, it was one of the mono thingies stuffed mostly with rules lol. I took some of the cards and put them in my blue-control deck, seemed to be ok.

If I ever remember I can put a list up of the red and the black deck. Then someone else can do the rest =P

Maybe eviltb will do the blue one? ;)

I have a question too. In what did it arrive? An envelope in the mail from WOTC?
What should I look out for?

I just got a coupon in my e-mail that I had to print out. Then, due to the fact that I live in a whole in Sweden, I had to travel 1h+ by car to the nearest town with a game shop in to receive my free card and promo deck. It sucks to live in a small town again =P

sweet, free cards! Where can I check for a nearest store? I'm still waiting for my promo card, but I wanna find the closest store so when it comes I can go lol

edit: I was looking for stores near me that sell Magic (I already knew where they are, but checking if any new ones opened up since I moved)...anyway, does it have to be a premium store or what?

Free is Free and great to me too.
Even though I have never played any variation of Magic previous to this and have no intention of ever playing the actual card game. The Free Card and 2 Free Decks work for me I got the Black Deck Lillianna Vess and The White Deck with the Claws of Vengence Dude on it. I have to say its the best value I have ever gotten out of a 10 dollar XBL Game. Dont see many other XBL Games giving goodies away :)

If you wouldn't mind writing the names of the cards in the white deck and the number of copies of each, then PM me with it, then I can update this (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=165477)thread with the decklist =)

I have a question about the card too.
How the heck does that card work? I have never seen any other card with those symbols on it. It's not even a creature. I'm so confused on how to use that card. Is that +1, -4 stuff supposed to be life point changes??? If so, this card sounds ridiculously overpowered.

Yep, it is not a creature. It is a planeswalker, much like you the player are considered to be one. Technically it can be considered another "player" with a limited set of abilities. The number in the bottom corner is it's "loyalty" count that it starts off with. Each ability modifies the loyalty count, the first one generally adds to it, the second and third subtracts (some exceptions will apply). The third ability is their "ultimate" power that will tend to have amazing game changing effects, like Jace milling for 20, Liliana getting all creatures in all graveyards, Garruk's Overrun, Chandra's widespread immolation, etc. They can be overpowered, yes, but they can also be very easy to take care of.

They can be attacked directly by creatures (just say you're attacking a planeswalker instead of your opponent), damage from player targeting spells/etc can be redirected towards them. Each point of damage takes away one loyalty counter. They're powerful, yes, but they still require some skill to use properly.

that sounds way too confusing, when they did they start making these planeswalker cards?

They started in the last set....I think =P Haven't really paid attention to Magic sets in the past many years...

But if you want to read more about the rules around these Planeswalker cards just go here (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Article.aspx?x=magic/planeswalkers/week4) for an in depth explanation.

They premiered in Lorwyn actually, which was a couple blocks ago, the first run was Liliana Vess (black), Garruk Wildspeaker (green), Ajani Goldmane (white), Chandra Nalaar (red), and Jace Beleren (blue). Shards of Alara continued the trend with Tezzeret the Seeker (blue), Elspeth, Knight-Errant (white), Ajani Vengeant (same as Ajani Goldmane, can only have one at a time, he's the green one even though his casting cost has a red and a white), Sarkhan Vol (Red), and then with Conflux we got Nicol-Bolas, Planeswalker (black).

If you play the actual game, give em a try and see how you like em, they can be a lot of fun.

Have they made any anti-planeswalker cards then? I know you can use dmg spells and attack them, but was more thinking in the lines of 'terror for planeswalkers' or similar.

the Capricorn

Nope, but anything that can affect permanents will get planeswalkers as well.

Example:
http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=2207&type=card

Being that there's only 10 'walkers right now, they probably didn't want to waste set space on them. Perhaps Zendikar (the next block, which will feature DotP covergirl Nissa Revane) will start to utilize more anti-planeswalker spells.
