Do you just need to read the letters because I cant pick them up, he just says "I better leave that here"?

I had no problem picking them up at all. Try using the look option rather than the pick up option, I'm fairly certain that's what I did.

The only one you cant pick up is the one on the tree***

I dont know how the hell i made that mistake.
