i dont think projectors are as good quality as the tvs cause i have a dlp projector and dont think the graphics compare to a dlp tv

Mine, in case you hadn't seen my Gamer Profile thread, is a Sony Grand WEGA 50" LCD. Love it, love it, love it. Everybody loves it and methinks its the most popular screen in the neighborhood. I paid $2500 for it about 2 years ago, and that was a wholesale price. It retailed for upwards of $4500 then, but HDTVs are coming down fast nowadays.

And don't forget about that law that Pres. Bush signed saying that in Feb of 2009 all analog TV transmissions will cease. Might be worth saving up for an HD set if you don't have one already.

I'm using my 20" Dell 2005FPW with the 360 VGA Adapter and Optical + Optical Audio right now until I decide if I really need an HDTV and if I do, which one.

I've been looking at the 50" Grand WEGA SXRD (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=KDSR50XBR1&Dept=tvvideo&CategoryName=tv_hdtv_projectiontv_42%22to51%22) for a while now and had actually decided to get it after it dropped in price recently from $4000 to $3500 (can be had at Circuit City for almost $3000 now), but now I've been reconsidering lately. For one, it doesn't take actual 1080p signals, but takes 1080i and upcoverts it to progressive scan, even if the original input is 1080p. Also, the lack of 1080p inputs or even 1080i makes 1080p seem like overkill right now anyway. Despite what Sony says, I have no illusions that the PS3 will play games at 1080p unless it's something stupid like Tetris™ TruHD™. It will do Blu-Ray movies at 1080p, but not many (if any) games. Then there is the extra $1000 premium at least on 1080p TVs vs. comparable 720p sets, the next generation of SXRDs shown at CES (these ones actually take a 1080p signal at 1080p@24Hz or 1080p@30Hz) and are also about 30% thinner.

I'll either wait to see the new 55" SXRD or go with a 720p LCD. In the meantime I can't argue with 720p on a 20" screen and 5.1 surround sound. Anyone else notice the LFE on 360 games are pretty weak?

i got my Westinghouse LTV-w1 32-inch LCD for $960 with tax at bestbuy, it was on sale its normally $1200, but it will probably be on sale again soon

We recently bought two Westinghouse LCDs (37" and a 32") together they cost around $3,000. I wouldnt' recommend them for gaming however, not on the 360 anyway. Many games have incredibly jagged lines. I think it has something to do with the refresh rates (even though 12ms should be fine, it doesn't seem to be the case here). The good thing about the 37" is that it has great picture quality for the price and it accepts 1080p signals from the DVI/HDCP port. Fun for PC gaming and will be nice with the upcoming Blu-Ray players and PS3, but its useless for the 360.

What I'd suggest is going to your local Electronics place and looking at their TVs, and bringing in your 360 and checking out the games on the different ones. If they REALLY want a sale they'll do it. You don't want to waste a grand or more on something you'll be unhappy with.

EDIT - gamertag: have you noticed any jagged lines on your model? If not, maybe it might just be a bad set and I can exchange it.

no i havent seen any jagged lines it looks beautiful to me, i checked real quick and the response/refresh rate of the 32 inch is 8ms, i dont know about the 37 though

It's all relative. For example an image that size needs the right signal. A projector needs component connections minimum, and needs to be properly calibrated.

All projectors are not created equal either.

A $5k plasma will probably look better than a $1k projector. However a $3k pj will give it a run for the money with 4 times (or more) the screen real estate.

I've had lots of buds enjoy this system,, everybody always prefers the 8 foot screen, and the 360 really shines there at 1080i.

Goin with blu-ray :). For the price of an HD-DVD player ($500-800) I could probably a buy a PS3, so I'm going that route for hi-def movies.

Resolution looks good. 720p or higher is what you want, and it is that. Brightness is pretty standard on LCDs, contrast ratio is lower than newer LCDs, but 3000:1 is in no way bad. Response time is 12ms which should be good enough. The problem is different companies measure response times in different ways in order to make it look faster than it really is, so you should really see it in person at your local electronics store to be sure. Anything under 16ms SHOULD be good though. See it in a store and put on a news channel with the crawl at the bottom or a football or basketball game. If you see ghosting (i.e. fast moving images leaving a trail), look elsewhere, especially if you want to game on this TV. Inputs look good with 1 HDMI and 2 Component hookups for a total of 3 HD inputs, and it looks like it has a VGA adapter too so you can hook it up to your PC. As for the value, that's kind of subjective. But after a glance at prices, it seems for a 23 inch LCD that's not a bad price. Even Dell's 23" TV is about $800 so $730 looks to be a pretty good deal. Most other 23" LCD HDTVs seem to be $800-1100 after a cursory glance.

I have a 62" DLP. I reccommend DLP over any other technology out there, unless you want to spend 10's of thousands of dollars. Projector is good for Movies and video games but not for TV.

Yep, standard TV sucks on projectors, there is just not enough resolution.

Scoob, if you are looking for the best picture for the cheapest and can stand the weight, go with a CRT. The have a better picture then ANYTHING (thats right anything) and last forever. I am bringng back my LCD and getting a 30 or 26 in WS HD CRT for my gameroom and the Samsung 50" that was listed in this post. To the guy looking at the Samsung 23" that is a great TV for gaming. 3000:1 is a great ratio and Ive seen those tv's in action (who hasent they are the ones in the 360 setups in most stores) and they do rock. DLP is the best value out there BUT keep in mind them bulbs need to be replaced every few years and they are not cheap. Like 200-300 bucks. ;)

CRT is on top until SED hits at a fair price. Then LCD/Plasma/CRT/Rear Projection are oboslete.

One thing to remember about HDTVs is that not every TV is right for every person. For example, because many DLP screens use color wheels, and some people see "flickering" on DLP screens because of the way their retinas are. It's always best to see a TV in action before you jump off any cliffs and buy one. Make sure it works the way you want it to for what you want it to do.

You're looking at a 32" LCD then. A bigger LCD costs over 2K unless you find a REALLY good deal, Plasmas that small aren't true HD (i.e. they are 480p) and rear projection doesn't go that small. So it's CRT or 32" LCD.

I was at costco(wearhouse type store) and they had a nice plasma 50inc HDTV by i think samsung for 1800 it was nice but i was lookign up at it i dunno how well it would be looking straight forward and what not.

big tvs are sometime lighter then flat screens and stuff....

No kidding, last year when I moved into the house I have now I had a different TV than I do now. I had a 55" rear projection CRT. It weighed 320 pounds and since it was just me and one other friend moving all our stuff, the TV was the hardest to move. We just about killed ourselves moving it. My new TV which is actually bigger than my old TV, only weighs 98 pounds. I sold my old TV on craigslist with the stipulation that you had to come pick it up. 3 marine guys came and baught it...thank god i got rid of it.

Yeah, doadea, I had that same problem when I moved from Maryland, although not quite as bad. It was a 36" Sony Trinitron and I think the specs said it was about 250. What made it even worse was it was just me, and I was on the third floor. I just said screw it and sold it before moving.

The SXRD which is the rear projection I'm looking at is about 98lbs at 55" so that's not too bad. It's about the same as my other choice which is 36-42" LCDs.

the tv's I'm looking at are only like 80 lbs so I could move that my self or very easy with a friend. LCD kinda looks weird watching normal tv imo.
Not HDTV. It looks great on HD tv looks weird on normal TV. and the signal from the cable is good I checked (I work at the cable company)
