A Gears of War update should start pushing through the system at some point tomorrow, Tuesday January 9, 2007 prior to the two new multiplayer maps being available on Xbox Live Marketplace on Wednesday January 10, 2007. The maps, plus an introductory video featuring Gears designer Cliff Bleszinski, are free thanks to the kind sponsorship by the Discovery Channel's Future Weapons series which launches next Monday January 15th, 2007. Be sure to check out the show to see some really cool firepower. Here is a list of what was addressed in this update:

• Fixed aspect ratio distortion when using VGA cable with 4:3 displays at resolutions higher than 640x480
• Fixed voice issue with new players joining Player Match games in progress
• Players can now get the Achievement for "Dish Best Served Cold" when using Troika turret to kill RAAM
• Fixed rare situation where host could loop countdown and never start match
• Fixed rare situation where players could get stuck after chainsawing in multiplayer
• Reduced Grenade Tag melee distance
• Enabled “Strict” NAT check on host to prevent possible connection issues
• Optimized server browser queries to return results more quickly and prevent scroll bars from hiding quality of service icons
• Reduced number of possible revives in Execution to match Warzone
• Removed host name from Ranked match server browser
• Disabled security cameras in Ranked matches
• Ranked matches now require balanced teams (3v3 or 4v4)
• Increased penalty for quitting a Ranked match to -50 points
• Added additional cheat detection code
• Additional housekeeping updates

Well i'm both pleased and disappointed. Removing the host name from the server list merely slows things down, people will still find each other.

Nice that they've given quitters a 50 point penalty and reduced the tag distance though.

Good:

• Reduced Grenade Tag melee distance (Finally)
• Optimized server browser queries to return results more quickly (Will make searching better)
• Increased penalty for quitting a Ranked match to -50 points (Good, but far from enough)
• Added additional cheat detection code (always a good thing)


Bad
• Enabled “Strict” NAT check on host (Could make it harder to host?)
• Disabled security cameras in Ranked matches (I enjoyed watching these)
• Removed host name from Ranked match server browser (Why do all these games try to discourage from playing with friends? I thought that Live was all about making friends and playing games together with them)


• Players can now get the Achievement for "Dish Best Served Cold" when using Troika turret to kill RAAM

I know everyone is going to complain but I have to agree with th "Removed host name from Ranked match server browser" update. It isn't fair for players who are decent but stuck on a bad team, then on the other side you have a group of experienced players that are all friends. They aren't discouraging playing with friends, just not in ranked. There's always Player matches people.

Now with that said here's the stuff I like...

• Fixed rare situation where host could loop countdown and never start match (Sometimes it isn't the host's fault, I've had this happen to me during my hosting for the achievement and got bad rep because of it.)
• Fixed rare situation where players could get stuck after chainsawing in multiplayer (Haven't had it happen but sucks when it happens to teammates)
• Reduced Grenade Tag melee distance (Another great thing to help stop the winers)
• Reduced number of possible revives in Execution to match Warzone (Not something I completely understand but it sounds good)
• Removed host name from Ranked match server browser (Read above)
• Ranked matches now require balanced teams (3v3 or 4v4) (Finally that'll stop the people from trying to get better chances.)
• Increased penalty for quitting a Ranked match to -50 points (Maybe this will help quitters but most may not care about their score.)
• Added additional cheat detection code (I'm hoping this counts for glitchers, only bad thing is if it happens accidental via Fuel Depot)

Only bad thing I saw was... • Enabled “Strict” NAT check on host to prevent possible connection issues (I can see this hurting people looking for an achievement)

It's actually a Berserker. Yes, in a maids outfit. And yes, she looks surprisingly attractive. The update they describe is giving her an updated Dyson® bagless vaccum cleaner and one of those feather duster gimmicks.

Crash; spot on. People will find a way to play with their friends anyway, MS/Epic ought seriously revise their position on this.

I wouldn't be playing ranked matches if it weren't for the achievements.
It's all about fun factor for me, and i have much more fun playing with friends than with random people that 9 times out of 10 i can't count on, let alone talk to them.

The only problem with that is that Player matches don't keep track of stats. I mostly play with my team, so by playing ranked I can go into my stats and pretty much tell how we are doing as a team as far as wins/losses for both rounds and matches.

That way you are matched up automaticly with people close to your rank and skill. I still don't see why more games haven't done this with how popular it is in Halo 2.

WOW!!! Im like all these improvements. These are great steps to improved the ranked matches and put everyone on even ground. I hated going against committed teams on ranked. I hated host dropping rooms because their buddies werent in the room. I hated quitters. These improvements will help steer people who arent serious or just wanna play with friends to the player matches and those who really just wanna jump on to improve their ranking and achievements to the random ranked matches.

The point is, there's no reason to get mad at people who play as a team just because they have a team to play with, and you get stuck with people who suck. The people playing as a team are not to blame for this!

Exactly! I tried playing a couple random matches, and all you get is people that quit, steal your kills, don't talk, or speak in a language that you can't understand anyways. Therefore I play with friends.

Also looking at the epic forums, it seems a large number of people think that teams only play together to boost rank, and that by hiding the host it will show your "individual" true skill and that is what the ranking was made for.
What I don't understand is why do you care about "individual" skill when it is a team based game. They might as well made it deathmatch only and took away all team-based gameplay if you can't play with your team.

I seriously have lost a lot of interest in this game now, and I am sure 1000's of others feel the same way. I can see Halo 2 becoming the #1 played game on live once again where you can actually play with your friends/team

Epic, you just went way down in my estimation. I've spent countless hours playing ranked games with my friends. This was the best online multiplayer game since Halo 2, and now you have completely and utterly ruined it. Not only am I going to be returning my GoW game, but I will never purchase another product from you again. And I'm not the only one who feels this way, I have numerous friends who are finished with you as well. You took the most addicting game I have ever played and ruined it by taking out the best part of it, playing ranked matches with your friends. I was going for the 10,000 kills achievement, and now I really don't care about it anymore because who the hell wants to play that much by themselves? Everyone I know was looking forward to some sort of a matchmaking system and what did we get? We can't even play with our friends in ranked at all now! Honestly guys, what were you thinking? Did you really want to piss off that many loyal customers and the huge fan base you've built with this once magnificent game? And do you thin that 2 free maps will just make us all forget about this and thank you? New maps are nice, but what good are they if you can't play on them with your friends? I hope you know that you have lost a lot of fans, and people won't put up with this kind of thing.

Man, you are missing the point. I completely understand that I can play with my friends, on the new maps or not, in player matches. The thing is, I don't like player matches, I prefer ranked. Why? I'll tell you:

1. Ranked matches are more competitive than player matches. People playing ranked are more serious about playing because they are going for achievements, going for higher ranking, etc... I am a very competitive person so ranked is the game type for me.

2. No one can be kicked out of ranked matches. The match starts and the only thing someone can do if they aren't having their way is quit. Luckily people will be losing points from quitting now, so hopefully even that will become a thing of the past.

3. You can't get achievements in player matches. Like I said before, I was going for the 10,000 kills achievement, not only for the achievement itself, but for the sweet ass gamer pic that comes with it. But seriously, who wants to play that much with people they don't know? I certainly don't.

4. Ranked matches with your friends is just plain more satisfying. Competing with them on the leaderboards, kills, wins, etc..., was a lot of fun for me and my teammates.

If Epic would just give us a matchmaking system, i.e. Halo 2, all the problems would be solved. The casual players would still have player/custom matches, and the more competitive player such as myself could enjoy some intense 4v4 matches vs. other squads of friends. Not only that, but a matchmaking system would even further discourage quitters. Seriously, who wants to quit and let their friends down? When people are playing with other people they don't know, they don't care about who they're pissing off by quitting.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of what they're doing in the update is going to improve the game. But for me, not being able to play ranked with my friends has all but ruined it. http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

The people on the epic forums are absolute morons. They're all just happy because they don't have friends to play with, so now they can go into a game and not have to play against a team and get their asses handed to them. And there's no chance of them getting friends to play with as a team because they are all the quitters and the people who bitch and moan that we all end up playing with every time we go on.

They should just make player matches for the idiots who want to act like jackasses, and ranked should be for people who want to play seriously. It makes no sense doing it the other way around. Now player matches are aimed towards the people who want to play seriously and ranked is for the idiots who want to sing, yell, quit, and complain. :confused:

If Epic wouldn't have done this they would have surely kept Gears on top of the most played Live games probably until Halo 3. I mean, in one day I went from thinking this was the best multi-player game to play, to now I can't wait for a good multi-player game to come out. Wow, pretty angry responces. I'm not quite sure I'm ready to sell my game back to gamestop just yet, somehow I doubt that would make Epic sorry anyway. Sounds a bit childish, I mean they already have your 60 bones.

I'm pretty frustrated though. I loved playing ranked match because of the lvl of competition. Because the games are for points people play to win. I loved playing with my friends and that is really the only way I've played the game in the last month or so. This game is about the team play. A decent team can smoke 2 good players and a few slackers 9 times out of ten if they work together. I have had too many times where one of my "teammates" will run right past my downed body as he trys in vain to down or kill the guys I was working on. I usually can down at least one and almost the 2nd, but I need the team player to help finish them off, not steal the kills or try to and die in the process. I hated halo 2 because of the lack of team play and the cheating. I couldn't stand the cheating kids ( by kids I mean anyone under 25 ) and thier immature mouths. Rarely have I seen just one guy dominate in Gears like I did in Halo. Gears is about the team, working together.

Why they removed the host name is beyond me.

I think the only reason it didn't bother me was because I mainly play with my friends in the player matches because it allows rotation of the maps instead of getting out and finding them all over again.

At first I liked the idea because when there aren't any friends on, you aren't screwed in a match were you end up having to kill four experienced players yourself when you are stuck with new people. Which I don't mind 4 on 1 because I like a challenge but when they rush or just tag you it gets aggravating.

Only positive thing I've seen is a post by Mark Rein says this is only the first update.

This isn't the point though. We know that we'll still be able to find out friends. Sure it will take a little more time then it used to, but it can and will still be done. The point is about what Epic was thinking. They are discouraging people playing as teams because people on cheat when they play as a team. They are penalizing people who want to play as teams in a teamwork based game.

So I FINALLY talk my friend (been playing H2 with the guy from day 1) into getting a 360 (citing GoW as my main selling point) and the guy loves the system, but hates the lack of Halo-style matchmaking. I agree with this sentiment but have grown accustomed to often spending more time trying to get a game started with friends than actually playing. Now that we can't search for each other in a conventional manner anymore, I really think he's going to trade in his 360 for a DS Lite or something simple. A lot what is included in this update is fantastic and appreciated, but this is overall severely bogus. The scallywags will still find a way to join each other's room, join opposite teams and PC thier way to douchebagdom (I hereby coin the phrase), so all this "addition" really does is subtract from the game's playability. Bad Epic, bad.

yes this game is a team based firefight but the achievements are based on individual accomplishment and rankings are based on individual accomplishment. I dont believe its fair when I enter room just because i wanna pick up the game and play and have to be pitted against a solid team. nor do i think its fair that i have to keep searching for ranked games because each room i go into is stopped because all their friends didnt make it in the room.

i boost all the time to finish achievements on some games but i really think achievements should be achieved. Just because they took out a way to find ur friends shouldnt stop you from going for the seriously achievement. U should still want to achieve this on ur own merit. this new fix only helps keep this game from being like Final Fantasy of Rainbow Six (not to put them in the same league but just for a moment) These games turned players away because at a certain point your just going to have to play with a team and the only real way to enjoy them is with a team.

i dont think you should dis the update cuz its going in the right direction they just need to up the ante on the player matches and give a stat system in the player matches.

this is the way that the game should have originally came out. a great multiplayer game of strategy but without so much of a reliance on a solid team.

You're right and I agree that it's not always fair. But my point is that Epic went about the wrong way in fixing it. With a matchmaking system they could have made everyone happy. It would be two teams of four playing against each other instead of 1 team and 4 randoms. But now, it's just all random people which makes it so you can't play ranked with your friends.

The more I think about it, why couldn't they have done this:


Keep the patch intact for warzone and hide the server names. Why/ Because so much of the Warzone games I've played, I'll admit I have played hundreds yet, are more about the achievment hunt. Fools trying in vain to kill a whole team with the sniper and never talking or helping out their teammates.

I think assassination and execution should have been left alone in regards to the hidding the server patch. To me those gamestypes seem more about team squad based play. For the whinners that don't want to face a "team" they can then go play Warzone. For Gamers who want a challenge without playing with fools that don't talk or work as a team( that only a ranked match can provide) we have execution and Assassination. I prefer execution myself.

I think the camera loss in the Death screen is stupid although I can see how a phone call or voice chat would help out a player still alive. not that I'd do that.

The pts lost for quiting is too little. It should be at least a hundred or even 200. If a guy leaves on your team you should get a pts bonus for them leaving because you stuck it out like a man.


The thing that burns my ass the most is that my bloody 360 died last week and my return box just arrived. I can't even play the real Gears one last time. At any rate just relax guys, I'm sure it'll get better, they know we are pissed. they could easily add extra modes that either use the patch or don't

This was the best multiplayer game I've played since Crimson Skies. It was better than Halo2 even without matchmaking. More team based strategy was needed to win.

Thankyou for fixing the bugs, adding new maps, housekeeping, etc etc, all of which i was very pleased to read about, until i stumbled upon the infamous new rank changes.

It ought be very apparent to you (assuming you frequent other boards than this) that the general consensus regarding aforementioned rank changes is nothing but dislike and disappointment.

Yes, there is a small percentage of players that agree with the new system; perhaps they don't have decent friends to play with, or even none at all, i don't know nor care, but the majority of players, your customers, are gagging to play ranked games with their friends as they have been doing since buying the game. No, not to boost, we're not all 10, but to enjoy competitive matches with people you can count on.

People do understand the reasonings behind what you've done, but it'd be a fair comment to say that the larger percentage of the players don't agree with it, and that's excluding the losers that boost for ranks/achievements etc.

Cliffy B can shake his sarcastic fists at the heavens all he likes, I'll be hesitant about purchasing any further games you make as will many others.

I've gotta say that I agree with Wet Factory. I am in favour of not listing the Hosts name in ranked matches. But before everyone jumps on my back Epic have made two big errors in this game which contribute a lot to this problem and these are that there is no Clan support and achievements are all in Ranked matches only.

The problem as I see it with showing the Host's name is that by showing only the host name only the Host's mates can join him. That means you have a team that is not only hosting but is a proper team (that talk and everything :) !). This puts a huge disadvantage on the opposing team as they are made up of people that possibly don't talk in the same language or know each other's game. The BIG problem is that the team playing the host is NEVER going to be a group of players who play together a lot, as the host name is the only easy mechanism by which his friends can join the same game. This is why showing the host name is such a bad idea, it skews the whole game and is really unsatisfactory if you go online and just play by yourself, or want to meet new people.

A better solution would be to show ALL names in the lobby, this means that the hosts team could be joined by another proper team, not a collection of individuals. This is a team game, and should be played as a team, but having the achievements as all ranked games and showing only the host's gamertag ruins it IMO.

For me that is not true. ill play anyone who join even if they are a team. l only host when i have a friend on and its 19 Rounds. lve found out that the teams of 4 or 3 play 19 rounds. lve played with 3 Randoms on my team against a team of 4 while i was hosting and we won 19-15. And while playing with 1 friend and 2 Randoms me and my friend both had over 1000 points against a team of 4. All im saying is i dont have a huge problem with this but then again i kno people like my Girlfriend or Dad who just got the game to play with me on it and now its probly harder for them to get into a game with me. ill just play Co-op more like i have been. (7th Time going thru the game on lnsane next week)

I just played a couple matches during my lunch break, all 10+ matches. No one quit except when there was a connection problem in one match, a few people didn't wait for it to settle itself and left. Other than that I had a good amount of competitive matches with good teammates. However I have to point out that was during a lunch break meaning most of the kiddies were at school.

I heard that when you download the new levels it adds an update that disallows the viewing of host names, and makes the shotgun stronger and some other things like fewer matches per search. I really like Old Bones, Raven is alright though, depends on preference. The thing that people are complaining about is how they removed the ability to see the name of the person who hosted a ranked match, this was done to stop team stacking or something. I don't completely agree with it, but whatever. All in all, good patch.

From my opinion the update was a bad one. The only thing cool about the update was that they fixed the grenade tag distance. I just find it odd that for a developer that created the game to be played 4 vs. 4 they took out the feature that lets people play with their friends. For this reson I think this could quite possibly be the worst update yet for an Xbox 360 game. Just because more people play the game does not mean that the developers are doing their job in keeping people from playing it in the future with these type of updates.
