Dj Premier is really good, But this topic is def. an opinion. IMO the best producer/instrumentals is Timbaland with out a doubt.

I know it's really early in his game, but Kanye West is the greatest in my book. Timbo and Premier would definately be in my top 10 though.

A quick look at Wikipedia shows he produced some of the tracks on The Don Killuminati & All Eyez on Me. To my knowledge he did little it any production for anyone other than himself, but I also am not the biggest 2Pac fan.

I have always liked Dre beats. (the doc, not that new wannabe "dre")...
Timbaland is real good of course.

But the new producer of the times is without a doubt....Scott Storch.

ok, i love Pac. but he is not a top-notch, quality producer. i am one of the few people i know that chooses him over biggie hands down, but c'mon people! he barely made any beats!

r.i.p. tupac shakur. one of the greatest RAPPERS of all-time. :drunk

and one for my homies :drunk ;)

Yeah... not to step on any toes or start a gang war, but Tupac and Biggie would both be has-beens if they were still alive. I'm starting a new thread so we can keep this one on topic!

I don't think I can really pick out "the best" but some of my favorites off the top of my head are...

Hi-Tek
Dan the Automator - From his work on Deltron 3030, Kool Kieths Dr. Octagon, Gorillaz, and Handsome Boy Modeling School w/ Prince Paul
DJ Shadow
Eric B
Jedi Mind Tricks (Not sure the guys name)
9th Wonder

I thought of saying him, but went with Danger Mouse instead. Rick Rubin is definitely amazing though.

I love 2Pac but I dont see him as a producer.

Yes. 9th Wonder has been doing great shit with Murs and Just Blaze has some fucking crazy beats. I almost always dig his stuff. Madlib is dope too for some more Jazz type shit. And Francos right about Danger Mouse. Hell after Danger Doom and Gnarls Barkley he deserves producer of the year no doubt.

I'll go with Dr. Dre especially from his Chronic albums.

you may be right...pac could be alive. i have studied a lot that supports this idea.
and you may be right...pac could be the greatest rapper of all time. you do not get an argument from me...

but this thread is about producers, and although pac has produced a little bit...he is not one of the best of all-time.

just thought i would try and throw the thread back towards its intended direction is all. i enjoy your guys' discussion, but it is not fully applicable.
