Anyone else agree? I could probably play most of the game with it off, and even when I do use it, it hardly provides enough light to see what's in front of me. It's more of a means to attract enemies than anything.

Yeah, the only thing it's good for is attracting enemies so I played almost the entire game with it off.

There were times when I would wonder if I even had it turned on since I couldn't even see the light glowing.

Maybe it was the brightness settings on my TV, but there were times where I couldn't see 2 inches in front of me without it on. So, no, not useless.

Personally I found the whole "it attracts enemies" thing to be overstated, aside from Nurses it seemed like every enemy would see me irregardless of whether or not the flashlight was on or off.

Yeah i use it a fair bit, maybe you guys need to adjust the gamma if you are finding the game to bright

I agree now, my first playthru it didnt bother me too much, because it lent to the atmosphere, but my 2nd time w. ray gun, it really pissed me off, since i was basically running thru the game to get it over with and at times i couldnt see where to aim or walk.

Also when you read some of the documents the glare from the flashlight made them almost impossible to read.

Yeah, I especially noted this in the sewers, where I finally got fed up with it and turned the flashlight off and my gamma/brightness up.

Though the best way to experience the game is in the darkness, but not where you can't even see where you're going.

I thought the flashlight didn't really give enough light but then again I did notice when it wasn't on.

The flashlight in this game is garbage... like the developers wanted to make the game harder/scarier and realized that yes, it would be harder if you were half blind all the time.

i used it the whole time because if ur gamma is right, the game is very dark and it's hard to see something in houses or inner rooms.

Totally agree with this. I've not noticed a big difference in enemies seeing me or not. Even the Nurses seem keen on me with it off sometimes.

But I also sometimes wondered if I turned it on or off since I couldn't see much with or without. Eventually decided to ignore the gamma settings it's recommends (which bar you can not see, just see, etc.) and put the brightness up a bit. Now I can at least see the game ;)

For sure…if you can see fine with out it then turn down your brightness settings. There is a huge difference.

It's really dim but if you turn it off, some parts are pitch black :(. It's a must to leave on I think. Maybe the OP has his brightness set too high?

Just be glad we got the game and stop complaining about it, every game has its ups and downs. Everyone fails to mention what they liked about the game, yes, Alex Shepard was an ex marine or whatever he is, with a dim tortch and wonky batteries but it was still a creepy game!!!!

It is up to you, I have the game on the recommended settings, and the flashlight is essential at times. If your brightness is up, you aren't getting the full experience of the creep factor and wondering what is 5 feet ahead of you. The game is sooo much better when you leave it dark. I'll probably turn the brightness up after I beat it, so I can just run through quicker, but at least once through the first time on the intended brightness is a must IMHO.

Yeah it doesn't do an awful lot. Apart from looking at walls for drawings and other stuff. Some bits it makes a difference but nothing majority helpful. i guess if it lit up 2 much, it wouldn't be so.... scary?... moody, thats better. But i did find it useful with attracting/not attracting enemies. Obviously if you are right up next to them they will see you regardless of the light being on or off. When I first met Wheeler and hacked the door (just after you loose Wheeler again). I ran into the office. (flash light off) Followed by two Schisms. Killed them and then flashed the light a couple of times at the window to get the other two in. Before that I was swarmed by all four and kept getting my ass kicked. So the light thing helped. Same thing with others. Ferals in the streets and grave yard and Order members. I admit. it doesn't work all the time with all enemies but it does do the job.

Same here! Sometimes it just goes off on it's own!

I found that the flashlight was rather useless through about 95% of the game. There were times however that it was a little helpful. I still think SH 1 and 2 are way better though.

I agree totally. I'm having quite a few issues with this game across the board. The flash light is one of my biggest gripes... It's practically useless, especially if you fall foul to one of the games many darkness glitches. ¬¬
