Be careful playing Star Ocean off the hard drive, my friend and I have (different xboxes, different games, different saves, etc) experienced freezes after battles (not after any special battle either, his was after the celestial ship boss I think, and then he had another after a random fight, whereas my one was after a random fight).
My suggestion is, play off the disc for now. Yeah, you usually won't lose more than an hours playtime, unless you just never save, but still, its a headache.
Neither of us have experienced any freezes playing off the disc. So I'm going to continue doing so and wait for a patch. (The only real difference you'll notice is eliminating the 1 or 2 second load in and out of combat, anyway, plus slightly faster zoning).
Just a heads up.

thanks for the tip. i hadnt bothered installing it on my hd yet because the frame rates were fine and there we no overly long load times playing from the disc

Thats cool for a heads up, though on the other end here I have over 100 hours clocked playing on the hard drive and not a single glitch or freeze.

Haven't had any problems with freezing and have all 3 discs on my HDD. I've actually heard that installing on the HDD FIXES it... apparently it must just be a disc issue if it happens in the first place.

Funny you mention this, because in my case, it has been the opposite. I had been playing from the disc until I got two consecutive freezes. Then I copied the disc to the HD, and it never froze again with me. You know what also? When I was first prompted to change to disc 2, I kept playing with the disc and guess what happened 5 minutes within it - it froze. So in my case, I dunno why, I'm better off playing off the HD. My 360 is the new batch (Jasper if I'm not wrong).
I also had to play from the HD Eternal Sonata. Playing using the dics kept on freezing, but once I copied to my HD, it never really froze again.

I have been playing off both my HDD and the disc (20 GB doesn't have enough space) and haven't had any problems except slow loading times or late sound pop ins on the disc.
Though I do think it is just my 360. It can barely play any other games without installing them so yeah...

you could really install a 360 game to the hard drive without the disc. i didn't know that, how does it work.

Yeah I guess your mileage may vary. Either way, it seems rare. I've played probably at least 15 hours both installed and not, and I had 1 freeze with it installed in all that time, and none playing off the disc. Same sort of situation with my friend. We both have Falcon's, so that could be a connection? Both are pro's as well.
In any event, since its so rare, I guess the better advice here is just save often, just in case.

if you have the new xbox experience you can install disc to the hard drive by pressing the Y button when you usually press A to launch the game from the dashboard, and then a menu comes up. You still need to have the disc in the drive, but it only spins up to verify that its actually the game, so you cant rent a game and return it and still play it off of your drive, but it can improve loading times and makes your xbox quieter while playing and doesnt pump out as much heat IMO

The issue isnt reading the game, but its about Silence. Happens mid fight as well if you try and remove a character who is incapacitated but silenced. Turn off your party silence cast, and the freezes disappear with the exception of removing silenced dead people from the active party.

i just wanted to point out that microsoft shipped some zeyphr in january (the old crappy 360's that are known for being more vulnerable to RROD). check the voltage sticker on the back of your 360 and make sure your 12v line is running at 12 amps and not 15+ amps. (it will say this to a little bit the left of the manufacture date etc.)
freezing is NEVER a good sign, and if it isn't the disc it self that is causing it, you will see the problem getting worse.
on topic, i play all my games from the harddrive, and haven't had a single lockup yet. (roughly 15 hours in).
sometimes i get some frame rate issues in battle scenes where i am hitting alot of enemies at once with multiple hits though.
