View Full Version : Time Trials Are A Joke

i loved the game even speed run is ok but time trials are so annoying and no fun the amount of times i almost threw my controller because i dident do a jump right and die or lose alot of time is a joke.

Anyone else find this annoying part of game?
(why cant they just make achievements fun to get gradually through the game and just make it fun and not so damn annoying like so many other games have done.):mad::mad:

Haha, I am doing the Time Trials right now and Atrium One just drove me to the point where I wanted to break the disc.

Luckily I just paused the game and thought I would check the forums for some new posts, low and behold I see this thread staring back at me...

And to answer your question, yes I do find them extremely annoying.

yes they are very challenging but whats the point of easy achievements???
just practice you will get it.

This is more than "challenging". It's just plain annoying. It's simply unacceptable to follow a 3-5 hour campaign with something as boring and crappy as time trials.

if they are that boring and annoying, don't do them. video games are supposed to be fun. If you are not enjoying it play something else

I rather like them. Try downloading one of the top ghosts, such as one that just barely made the 3 star mark and see what they do by following them. It certainly helped me.

I had fun with the time trials. The only one that I really had issues with was Playground 3. I would be doing great on it and it would seem I would screw it up at different spots each time preventing me from getting 2 stars. Downloading the top ghosts helped me a lot on all the time trials. They helped me think of ways I would never have thought of.

Now thats an achievement.

I think the achievements for the Time Trials are how achievements are supposed to be.
You'll need some dedication to get all 1000 points for this and once you get those you're proud that you finally got them :p

Well...
Though they are annoying...
They are achievements...
They are something to achieve...
It takes skill and time to get them done...
And you get rewarded for it...

Time Trials are annoying, Speed Runs are worse. With TT's, it's at most 2 minutes of the course you have to do, albeit virtually flawlessly if you plan on getting 3 stars. With Speed Runs, even though you can make some small mistakes, it's still up to 11 minutes of a route, and if you mess up near the end (or even in the middle), that could be several minutes wasted. Jacknife is killing me at the moment. :(

To be honest I loved them. And the speed runs. I mean I put hours and hours into completing just a few time trials to 3 stars and none of it was boring. It was hard but not frustrating because I knew it was do-able. The amount of gameplay for the time trials and speed runs for this game for me is well into the 20 hours and I enjoyed every moment.

Oh god Jacknife if just ridiculous! I spent a good 2 and a half to three hours on it and my best was 11:57. Then again when I made a mistake that would throw me far back I would restart, just to make sure I get under the par.

And to be on topic the damned TTs are horrible. I can't even do playground 1 fast. I got the fast time on that course and it seems to me jumping helps. Doubtful but it looks like it

Time trials weren't that bad, and it gives a feeling of accomplishment to finish them. But the speed runs were awful. I'm surprised you prefer the speed runs to the time trials, since they take so much more patience and level memorization. Jacknife nearly caused me to stop playing the game.

HamKet
03-09-2009, 04:26 PM
Jacknife took me well over six hours to complete. In that time, I only completed it maybe five times, because I would restart if I made more than two mistakes.

None of the other speed runs, including Shard, took me as long to complete.

The Time Trials, while frustrating, were much more doable. I don't think it took me more than an hour or two to get three stars on each map (on all but six, which I got two stars).

You know, honestly I went back and tried to do the TTs with someone that barely made 3 stars, and its really hard to follow it at times for me, I don't know why. I find it much easier to find a run on youtube personally... Same with the speed runs, theres a lot that I didn't realize was possible which makes the runs easier.

Well, except for Jacknife...

I'm not trying to be an ass so don't get me wrong but this game takes a lot more skill and dedication than a game where all you do is " point and shoot ". Timing and practice are the main things to focus on in time trials. Personally, if time trials weren't as challenging as they are I wouldn't have done them. The speed runs are annoying as well, but just like the time trials they can be done. As far as this being a completionists nightmare because of the new DLC, don't complete it if you find it too hard or annoying. I only need 5 more achievements for the game...4 being chapter speed runs and beating it on hard. I'm also proud to say that on the DLC map Kinetic, I'm/atleast was 5th on the leaderboards. I am by no means bragging, ok maybe a little lol, but seeing my name up on the top 10 of the leaderboards for once was a product of dedication and will. It's not impossible to do if you have patience, dedication and maybe a little bit of luck. Best game I have played in a long time.

Yep. Awesome game but lame how they made a ridiculously short story and then just filled up the game with time trials and speedruns.. I dont think the game is worth the money because of that. If you're into time trials and not much more, I guess it's a good buy. Frankly I'd rather buy a racing game for that.

Definitely a good rental though, the story is lots of fun but unfortunately you can beat it in like 3.5 hours, and it's not hard in the slightest way. I beat it on hard without dying the whole game. That's kinda sad.. lol. And I remember dying on easy when I first played! I guess I just didnt know the moves yet :P

Anyways, still loved the game overall.

Time Trials were rough, but not too bad in my opinion. I wouldnt recommend downloading ghosts and following them, because most of the time I would get too far behind them to see and it was just pointless. Had better luck watching trials on youtube and taking their route where you can pause and rewind as you like. There are a couple guys on there that have uploaded videos for 3 stars on every trial. What made them easier is that you only have to get 3 stars on a few and the rest you can just 2star.

Also, DLC really pissed me off when it came out because I will never have 100% now. 3 stars on EVERY Trial? That's a joke.

Iīm glad they made them this hard. This made my Mirrorīs Edge playtime a lot longer. Who cares for time trials where you get three stars in 2 or 3 tries? No one, because that isn't what time trials are for. I also wouldn't have bought the Pure Time Trial pack if it was easy, no point in that.

This man knows what he's talking about. The Boat and the Shard (chapter 7 and 9) were the two hard speedruns for me. Atrium 1, Shard 1, and Playground 3 were the hard time trials. I beat my friends' times on all those and I'm damn proud of that. These are real achievements. I disagree with giving us achievements for progressing through the game since that's not an achievement (unless you're beating it on the hardest difficulty)

I'm so glad i've got the 90 star rating but I can't be bothered to do the speedruns because those are annoying as hell. I'd rather spend 1 hour on a single timetrial, if I fail at one speedrun I can't be bothered to do it again.

dakisbac

I'd rather do the Speedruns than the time trials. Almost all the speedruns I got in my first or second attempt, I think there was only one (maybe two) time trials I did on my first go. They're a little longer yes, but you get a LOT more leeway in terms of making mistakes

I'm doing the speedruns before the time trails, and because I'm OCD I'm doing them in order from prologue to chapter 9. I just finished Jackknife, and yeah it was a beast to finish but it wasn't impossible. I could feel myself getting better every few tries, and that feeling is what I love about this game.

What I would recommend if you're having trouble on a speedrun, what helped me anyway, is not to rely on just one youtube walkthrough. It seems every video has a little hint that the others might not, or if one video uses a method that's too difficult for you there might be another video that uses a different method for that particular spot.

I used a combination of the walkthrough on the achievement guide for this site, mixed in with some tips from the world record video. Some of the world record tips are easy and shave off a good thirty seconds to a minute of your time, and that's not including any of the fiendishly difficult moves.

For Jacknife in particular, the tips I'd recommend from the world record vid (some guy named Ovendonkey, I think) are staying on the corner of the beam as it descends into the first hole, it's a glitch that takes off ten seconds at least. Also when you're in the area with all the columns, he uses some walljump/jump combos that get him up to the top level about ten seconds faster than the regular walkthrough.

Those moves alone were enough for me to shave off some time and get Jacknife under par even with a death mixed in, so don't lose hope and RESEARCH THOSE LEVELS.

Personally I would play the campaign first, then do the time trials, then campaign on hard then the speed runs.
My reasoning being that the time trials are just parts of the main game anyway, so from all the replaying of the time trials you'll be doing once you've finally got the 50 stars you'll be in alot better position to do the speed runs, imo of course.

Then you can move onto 90 stars :)

zimzvm
06-13-2009, 10:46 PM
first off I played campaign on normal, then I did some time trials but I managed to get like 20 stars. after some break from the game I did hard mode and the time trials to get 50 stars. now I'm doing second break from the game for I have many other games to play. after I get back to ME i'm planning on doing the rest of the stars including most of the Pure Time Trials tracks as well as the 7 missing Speedruns. definitely at the very end, unless I'll be fed up with getting more and more stars I switch to them a bit sooner.
that's the plan ; ]

100% agreed. Definitely the best way of getting all 3 stars on every track is watch, investigate and then mimick some media videos like youtube. These videos show players' view instead of transparent ghosts, speed, actions in details, whereas ghosts seem to be helpful but hard to follow so they are just cheeky show-offs actually. the true heros are those who uploaded their playthroughs on youtube, at least in my opinion.

I manage to 1250 this game so I planned to deal with every map till I get 3 stars, but I am only done about 1 3rd though. I even feet painful on my thumb... 26 tracks with 3 stars, remaining 6 tracks with 2 stars, guess I got no choice but to work hard.

For those who have tried both or completed one or the other, which would you say are harder achievements:
Mirror's Edge 1000/1000
Call of Duty 4 1000/1000 (Mile High Club Achiev)
Call of Duty 5 WaW 1250/1250
Left 4 Dead 1000/1000

I haven't completed the DLC for WaW, but I have 1000 in all those games. Left 4 Dead is easily the most difficult. If you do Nothing Special legit, you're looking at 15-20 hours of frustrating trial and error. Thats for one achievement!

It's tough to separate the others. I'll say CoD4, then WaW, then Mirror's Edge. Mirror's Edge took 3-4 days for the 1000, whereas the others took quite a bit longer. However, if you were to go for 1250 on Mirror's Edge, it could go to 2nd...

I only just recently started getting into achievements (first post!). My first 1000 was Iron Man which left me feeling dirty, thinking, "uh...that's it?"

I'm working on Mirror's Edge now (about 750 at the moment), practicing time trials, speed runs, etc., and although it is hard as hell, the final, "my god, I am awesome," feeling when you finally make it just doesn't even compare. As has been said before, I have to agree that annoying/hard doesn't make an achievement bad, but actually increases the personal value of it.

Besides...shouldn't the topic be "Speed Runs Are A Joke?" If anything Speed Runs are like 100x harder than Time Trials in terms of length, dealing with enemies, time investment, etc. You can play the same Time Trial 10 waste about 20 minutes, or you can play Chapter 2 Speed Run 10 times and waste nearly 2 hours. Still, achieving a Speed Run is awesome though.

Castlevania1995
07-16-2009, 07:19 PM
I agree with the above poster, except it wouldn't take 10 tries to do a speedrun (if you run till the end). This is my first post and I have my xbox since 12 days, so I borrowed a few games. Today I got the last achievement in ME!

I think the speedruns are harder to do then the time trials, even if you know the fastest way. The time trials are short and by downloading ghosts (which I can't, don't have money for xbox live) you just have to learn what to do. I had to get 3 stars on 4 of them and the rest 2 stars. you can just 1 star hard ones and 3 star easier ones.

But with some of the speedruns, if you make one mistake near the end you can start over again. speedrun 9 is very hard, 2 is hard (since my game glitches after a while) but the rest should be manageable if you look at some world records. They still cost a few days.

I tore through the time trials. I had playground 1 3 starred and playground 2 2 starred from a long time ago, came back to the game after 7 months of not playing it and ran through almost all the time trials in just a few hours. I only need to 2 star 4 more that I haven't done yet then I got 50 stars. Got speed runs 7,8,9 left to do. I've spent maybe 20 hours on the game total so far. I've spent twice as long trying to get a single achievement, Mirror's Edge is skill based for the 1000 difficulty, but it isn't as bad as everyone is saying it is.

Remember, easy points are cool and all, but actually being proud of them is so much better. If they were all easy, there would be no point to the points.

Although i gave up on l4d i didnt find the achievements very hard so i dont know were to put that one, but WaW is a prob the easiest out of those.

i would put 1250ing mirrors edge as second hardest next to CoD MW then l4d then waw.

just the 1000 on mirrors edge i would say its easiest of those games.

I loved the game up until doing the time trials/speed runs. I haven't finished any of the speed runs and the time trials are kicking my ass. I don't think I have the patience for a game where if you make one small mistake you can no longer get 3 stars. I guess I could just exploit jump boosting and coiling like everyone else haha.

my advise to you is to do the time trials first.. once you can 3 star most of the courses you'll have a better idea on what routes to take in the speed runs..

Personally I don't mind replaying something over and over again until I get it right, but it just seems like these time trials are inconsistent. For example, I will "jump, turn, jump" and make it on a ledge, but then the next time I redo that part, it won't work. That is what I get frustrated at.

Unfortunately there were times where I did the Time Trail so much I actually messed up the Speed Run by going the same way as the trail haha. I did 2 speed runs and most of the time trails at least, but I have just so much skill, and by skill i mean patience. ;)

montrossity: I know exactly what you're talking about. It's annoying how you could almost do the identical move you did last run but suddenly you just can't make the jump or you keep grabbing something. Grrr. I swear, my neighbors probably think I have torrets. Oh, and no effing pun intended. :D

Personally I don't mind replaying something over and over again until I get it right, but it just seems like these time trials are inconsistent. For example, I will "jump, turn, jump" and make it on a ledge, but then the next time I redo that part, it won't work. That is what I get frustrated at.

I'm having doing the time trials, but I agree this is sometimes annoying. I know sometimes it makes sense (like the speed of climbing a ledge has to do with timing) but still it gets on my nerves when I swear I did it exactly like the last time but I get a different result.

The time trials are pretty annoying!!

As for 1000/1000 difficulty, I would say ME comes 2nd after Left4Dead.

Time Trials aren't a joke but it's frustrating and addictive at the same time.

I like both Time Trials & Speedrun's, something which I didn't belive I would appriciate when I bought the game. The Speedruns went kind of smooth for me, had some trouble with chapter 2 (who didn't?), but the rest of them were completed on like, the second or third try (first try on 0 & 8 ^^).

But the Time Trials... well, that's another story! Managed to get the 50* after a while, and at the moment I am trying to three-star everething I am able to before I get the DLC. I've only got 5 two-starcourses now, and my question is: Is it possible to get 3* on all DLC-couses except one? :)

if they are that boring and annoying, don't do them. video games are supposed to be fun. If you are not enjoying it play something else

Agreed! Some challenges are quite challenging, but I will hope to find the time do at least most of them. They can be quite frustrating sometimes, but still I am very happy they are in the game. I absolutely love this game.:)

Just got the Superstarachievement, which was my last achievement in Mirror's Edge, yay! Wonderful game really, where you definetly have to work for the GamerPoints. :)
