diamonds in the desert...

I have just arrived in the desert and I am trying to get the 4 diamonds out there, but when I try to go for the 2 diamonds furthest south I pass out and cant get to them (like I am going out of the map)

Do I need to go on and come back later to get them?

yes, you have to wait until you've unlocked the south territory, then you can get the two southern most diamonds.
