How is game progress saved?

And how do you continue a saved game? I was playing single player and made it to the first safe house and the stat screen came up and loaded the next level. After the level loaded, I quit and came back and there is no option to continue. Just the main menu where I can choose whatever level I want to play. In the manual it says that your storage device saves progress but I can't see where or how.

Search next time before making a thread which has already answered your questions and/or concerns
