EDITED: turns out, you CAN shoot your weapon at any time, as long as you are not facing an enemy or one is near you, and it will not count against you. you can check to see if you have shot at anyone by pressing back and it will tell you in the top right hand corner; "So far, you have not fired a shot at anyone"

I'd like to know the answer to this one myself. I picked up a gun and accidentally fired it while playing last night. I exited the game quickly, but I need to know if it's now ruined.

hit the back button and it will tell you whether or not you've fired a shot at someone

You can definitely shoot guns and get the achievement. I machine-gunned all the computers in the final chapter myself, sometimes with cops not far out of the line of fire, and I got it.

I suspect you have to actually kill someone with a gun for your counter to go up, as I'm sure I shot a couple cops accidentaly, but I'm not 100% sure. But you can check with the back button anytime (I checked constantly).

There's a part of the story where I think you need to fire a shot, but it doesn't hit an enemy, so the achievement still works. I fired some shots at the servers, but restarted the area just in case.
