Has anyone been reading the Marvel Civil War event? I recently got into it and have been catching up on what's going on. Pretty intense stuff! For those of you who dont know what the hell Im talking about; Marvel (the comic publisher) has been having an ongoing multi series event called Civil War. Like I said, this event is crossing in to many different Marvel comics and affects every Marvel character.
The story, without giving too much away starts off with of with a fight that ended in a villain named Nitro blowing up a chunk of a town which included a school. A lot of people died, and among the casualties were many children. Outraged by the event, many citizens turn against mutants and super heros and the government passes a law that requires all Mutants, Super Heros, Super Villains, Masked People, etc. to register with the government as well as become a government employee. Anyone who does not comply is considered a criminal and can be arrested. Leading the pack of people who support the law is Iron Man, and leading those who refuse to give up their rights is Captain America.
I cant tell you how huge this is if you are into comics. So many different things are happening that affect characters most people know even if they arent into comics. For example, Spider-Man has officially unmasked himself on television to help support the new law. Everyone knows who Spider-Man is now, no more secrets.
So far, Ive read a few of the comics and I am completely hooked on the story and cant wait to see what happens next. If you have read any of this, post your thoughts on it all. If you haven't read any of it and you are into this sort of thing, I highly suggest you start reading. Its history in the making!

I actually haven't read comics for about 8-10 years now but I have always liked the marvel superheroes. Of what I've heard this civil war is pretty awesome with about everybody siding with Captain America. I really want to read some of these comics but there isn't too many comic book shops in my area.

This is a crazy storyline...much, much better then last years lackluster House of M pile of crap. Mark Millar is a fantastic writer and McNiven's art is just spot on for this series, I see this thread is old, but are you still reading franco?
Issue five has a crazy return of a classic character which potentially ratchets this series up to a whole new level.
Anyone else out there into comics at all?

Wolverine Nuetral? Deadpool and Venom registered? Moon Knight evil?

Well you kind of get the impression that Wolverine is more anti-reg then pro, i think at least. Deadpool just wanted to reg for the shiny badge it gave him. Venom is getting paid to hunt down hero's so that's a no brainer, I haven't been reading moon knight though so i don't really know where he stands.
ps. On re-reading your post I see it could be read as questioning how good a story line it is, with those items occurring.

I own every X-Men and Uncanny X-Men comic from 1991 - 2001. I stopped after meeting the woman who is now my wife. I was collecting ALOT of other comics as well that I have in boxes in 2 closets. It was getting to be a huge financial burden and so I stopped cold-turkey and have never looked back...
... this is teasing me though. I hope I can stick to my guns :)

Yeah to me Venom ls a bad guy and just didnt seem like he would follow authority. And Wolverine ls a hott head and seems like he woulda been good.

I used to collect comics but I mainly focused on Alien and Predator but I did also get a lot of X-men too. You've got me intrigued with the Civil War though so I may have to look into it.

The "Civil War" series is 7 issues with a spin off issue of 5 mini stories.
There is also a parallel story called "Civil War : Frontline" which follows the events but from the perspective of a couple of regular people.
Also in pretty much every major marvel comic there are civil war tie ins. They aren't necessary for the main story but they provide some interesting insight from different characters. (Ramos and Guggenhiem's Wolverine arc has been one of the best all around arc's that i've read in a long time, of anything, and i read alot of comics).
Edit: Currently they've only released 5 of the 7 issues of the main story.

I just picked up the main story and some of the tie-ins like spiderman and wolverine. Im going to get some more but wow is this going to collossal. The main story covers all the main parts but the tie-ins help further explain a lot of parts the main story just jumps into. I think I found what i want for christmas now.

Issue 6 is out and sets up a crazy fight in issue 7
Anyone else reading this think the Punisher scene was goddam fantastic?
Also Frontline has finally started to get interesting just before it's final issue.
If The Punisher is in it then it will be worth picking up. But the lack of supplies over here make it annoying to get comics without ordering them from abroad or hunting down a decent comic shop.
I have known about the meta-human registration thing from the Marvel website, but never knew anything about the story other than Iron Man supported it.
I'm suprised that the X-Men aren't against it seeing as they strongly opposed the Mutan registration act in their own stories.
Just a few of the exploits of old Mr.Castle in the civil war thing:
Goldbug (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldbug_%28comics%29); killed by Punisher
Jack O'Lantern (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_O%27Lantern_%28Marvel_Comics%29) (Steven Mark Levins); shot in the head by the Punisher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punisher)
The Jester (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jester_%28Marvel_Comics%29) (Jonathan Powers); shot in the head by the Punisher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punisher).
Fulvio Morsella; a pedophile shot by the Punisher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punisher).
Plunderer (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Plunderer_%28Marvel_Comics%29&action=edit); shot by Punisher.
Stilt-Man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stilt-Man) II (not Wilbur Day; name unrevealed); killed by the Punisher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punisher).
What a guy.

Actually venom isn't a charector right now, he split from brock and he's hostless. You'd think that with something like a superhero reg act that marvel's biggest franchise the Xmen would be all over this since thier big thing is being against a mutant registration act, but not even a peep from them, what the hell? I can understand both side's position but it just crazy seeing cap fighting spidey, well he was anyway. And spiderman unmasked? Wow, did not expect that one at all. In the end though you gotta side with cap, I mean the guy fought nazi's! with a shield! And won! And then was frozen in ice? Come on gotta go with him over the rich guy, especially since stark was the one that disbanded the avengers.

The X-Folks actually did weigh in, in issue 3 I believe. They chose to stay neutral in the conflict and continue living in their little concentration-esque camp that the government created for them. Reason being, they've already got a large proportion of the world's population hating them, so why throw more fuel on that fire.
There are the odd individual who will pick a side, Bishop being Reg and Storm being Anti-Reg for example.

Should be this or next week, there was another main story spinoff as well just came out "Civil War : The Return" that was ... beh ... just like the last mini spinoff, a launch title for new books.
PS. Venom does have a host now he's in/on Matt or James or something Gargan aka The Scorpion

What issue did that happen in? Did it just come out, or has it been out for awhile now? Wow, the scorpion? Weird choice for the symbiote, you'd think he'd go with an angrier guy. Like could you imagine the kingpin joining with venom? That would be cool.

Cool, thanks! Now that I read it the idea makes sense, and with those things implanted in him to keep the symbiote in check, he could actually end up being more powerful than the brock version of venom.
