I know most people say its because nearly everyones dead and its in space but normally games are named after the meaning of the word, take fable for example. After a little research I found that Dead space is oxygen thats inhaled but is not included in the process of exiting as Carbon Dioxide. I don't see how that has anything to do with the game so if somone has any answer that is not people are dead and it's in space can you post it here. I really want to know

Can't please everyone, even to this day.

Would "Floating in the midst of random darkness where there is no oxygen, but becomes a random rescue survival mission to kill aliens" been better for you?

EA definately missed a treat with this game name.Definately more of a suitable name.Haha :D

Seriously though I dont see whats wrong with Dead Space, was a good choice of a name for a game in space with dead people/aliens :p

I can understand that and wasnt saying thats not what you was asking, I was just saying I fought Dead Space was a suitable name for the game but if you really want an honest answer to that I think you will have to speak someone at EA.We can all give our opinions here to your question but Im sure the name could have just been pulled out of a hat for all we know :D

Dead Space has a lot of different meanings in the context of the game, and I think the most important one is the reference to the fact that you're fighting dead things in space.

*possible spoiler* But if you read the background logs that you get after beating the game, it says the following, which seems to be another important meaning of Dead Space: "As it turns out, the field generated by the Marker creates a 'dead space' around itself that forces the recombination effect into dormancy."

Dead Space: "As it turns out, the field generated by the Marker creates a 'dead space' around itself that forces the recombination effect into dormancy."

There are so many words in the english language that can be used in different ways. Looking up 'Dead Space' to find its meaning doesnt specifically mean that that meaning is what they focused on when naming the game.

As stated above, theres a perfectly good explanation as to why its named Dead Space.

My question was not does typing into to wikipedia count as research, its why is the game called dead space. Don't post comments that don't really relate too the question much at all pease.

Don't really want to get into an argument because my "off the cuff" remark was clearly "too close to the knuckle" for you. You claimed to have done "A little research", and I merely commentated that this statement was somewhat inflated, when it appears that all you did was simply look it up on wikipedia. I say this because the summarising of your findings is pretty much verbatim of the half-arsed explanation on wikipedia.

The fact you so eagerly jumped down my throat pretty much proves I'm right. There's nothing wrong with using wikipedia (I use it quite frequently myself), just try not paint pictures in the imagination of spending twilight hours shuffling through library cards looking for an answer, when the most you did was lazily type "Dead Space" into a search engine.

As to the point of your question (I take it, that this is allowed on YOUR thread?), as to why the game is called "Dead Space", it's clearly a pun or "play on words" (Wiki links here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pun) & here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_on_words), to save you some time:p) that sounds snappy in a press release. Also both words of title are somewhat relevant to content of the game (but only the singular), as the game deals with themes of death and "dead" states and is set in space. It's pretty simple really, and if you'd played the game through and fully read the wikipedia article (and then verified the accuracy via another source) you'd know that the game has nothing (or very little at best, even with the most liberal application of the terminology) to do with "gas exchange". The naming of the game was most likely due to themes contained within the game (Death/Dead/Undead & Space/Sci-Fi), and the fact that the title happened to be a pre-existing term was most likely a happy accident that the developers and/or publishers stumbled upon. Meaning your quest to find a hidden meaning or a "double entendre" is tenuous at best.

Dead Space is an anagram of 'peaces dad'. So clearly Bob Geldolf was involved in the making of this game. The missing 'h' from 'peaches' is clearly a reference to molecular hydrogen being the most abundant molecule in the universe. This then obviously means that the most important element missing from the universe is 'peaces'. The game was developed by Bog Geldolf to call for universal peace!

I think we have our answer! Done! Finshed! Move on.

You could also take the two words at their wikipedia meaning.

The Necromorphs are dead. And they do appear to 'breathe' although it does little/nothing for them as they can survive in vaccuums quite ably and some of them even inhale oxygen and exhale gaseous bile to pollute the ship.

So, the Necromorphs have "Dead Space", or however you would use that in proper grammar/context.

Also, I have to agree with the guy who was said to be "flaming".

I'm sick of people on this website in particular NOT KNOWING what flaming actually is. Flaming is blatant insults, curse words, hate speech, belittling, berating, and jerkism based SIMPLY on disagreement or dislike for the person being flamed.

The guy didn't call the OP stupid. He didn't call the OP any other names. He didn't say the OP was anything deragatory. He simply told the guy that typing Dead Space into a Wikipedia search engine does NOT qualify as "doing research".

The only POSSIBLE way you could construe this as "flaming" is if you took it personally and offensively because you're some kind of crazed anal jerk who just goes around and LOOKS for a reason to be angry, and looks for people to say anything slightly towards the aim of "you're wrong for x reason" in order to declare "flamer!" and feel important about yourself. Grow up and learn the defintion of words, or simply shut up when you have no idea what you're talking about.

If you personally don't like being told that typing something into wikipedia doesn't qualify as research, you could do two things. 1. Stop using wikipedia altogther. 2. Ignore the people who told you that using it wasn't research.

It's not hard people! REALLY!

It's simple, really...

The ship, being derelict... is dead.

And it's in SPACE!

The Ishimura is dead in space. There.

Honestly. Who cares why it's called Dead Space? It's a hell of a lot better than Rancid Moon which is what it started out as.

Nobody asks why Halo is called Halo. I mean, a giant ring in space doesn't have much in common with a ring of light over a heavenly entity's head, now does it? You know... besides the fact that it's round.

I think you're worried about the trivial things in life a little too much there, mate.

Why not call it "Alive Space" because theres atleast 5 people alive for most of the story that we know about... Kendra, Hammond, Dr. Kyne, you, and that 1 other doctor fellow.

Or we could call it "Half-Dead Space" "Almost Dead Space" "Working on Becoming Completely Dead Space when Protagonist Shows up and Decides to Run Around on a Ship Full of Monsters Instead of Leaving"

And why Resident Evil? Surely with the expansive environments 'Evil of No Fixed Address' would have been better. My housemates, now that's resident evil!

Games have their names for the same reason we do, because somebody wanted us to have that name.

Dead Space sounds cool, and people are dead in space so there we go.
It doesn't matter about the name, for all I care it could of been called Care Bears: The Journey To The Shop For Cookies. But then, I wouldn't have bought it...

I dont know why you are talking about this, it is called dead space because there are dead things in space, or they are trapped in the dead of space. There is no other reason, stop looking for one!!!!!!
