E3 2013: X360A's Game of the Show Awards

This year's E3 felt more significant than it actually was, thanks to the arrival of the next-generation of consoles at the show. Bigger in terms of actual announcements during Monday's press conferences, the E3 showfloor itself was somewhat lighter on actual games than we expected, although it was still enough to garner the attention of Steven Spielberg, who we spotted being mobbed as he visited the Watch_Dogs booth.

Whether you end up with an Xbox One or a PlayStation 4 come November, there's a lot to look forward to as we look ahead to the first crop of next-gen games and enjoy the final years of current-gen gaming too, because there's a hell of a lot to get excited about there too.

As ever, we've picked our best and worst of the show for you to chew over and discuss in the comments, and as usual, feel free to tell us how off the mark you think we might be in the comments. This year, we think we're on the money. See if you agree with us.

Best Press Conference of the Show

We're sorry to have to break the news, but Sony ran away with E3 this year, blowing the roof off its press conference venue with some fantastic game reveals and some perfectly aimed barbs that hit Microsoft square in the nuts. While Microsoft had some stunning exclusives of its own and some fantastic announcements, Sony knew exactly how to take the wind out of its next-gen rival's sails, hitting them where it hurts: right in the DRM. With Microsoft remaining bullishly steadfast on its always-online stance, Sony decided to keep things as they are. You buy a game disc, you own it, and you can do what you like with it. That alone made a lot of people very happy. Add to that the fact that always-online is not a feature you'll find with PlayStation 4, and Sony's position is starting to look enviable. Couple that lot with a gameplay premiere for Bungie's sublime-looking Destiny, a slate of gorgeous indie games (Octodad looks hilarious), new first-party exclusives like 1886: The Order and another look at franchises like inFamous and Killzone in action, and you have all the makings of an almost pitch-perfect press conference. Then there's that PS4 price point... There's no disputing that Microsoft came away bruised.

	Winner – Sony

	Best Stand of the Show

There's really no contest with this one. No other stand on the showfloor managed to generate the kind of buzz and excitement that Ubisoft's did. It had more new IPs than any other too, with The Crew and The Division rubbing shoulders with Watch_Dogs and new instalments in established franchises like Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Assassin's Creed IV. It even managed to attract Mr. Steven Spielberg who we saw checking out Watch_Dogs, and featured a central podium where dancers danced and developers gave live demos of their games periodically. You could also play The Crew on an awesome driving rig (provided you waited in line long enough) and soak up all of the games on enormous screens. Square Enix was last year's winner, but they had the exact same stand with less games this year, leaving Ubisoft as the undisputed winner. This is how it's done.

	Winner – Ubisoft

	Best Looker of the Show

With next-generation visuals being touted all around E3 this year, a lot of games could have quite easily snapped this one up. From The Witcher 3 to Thief, to The Division or Watch_Dogs, E3 2013 showed us an early taster of what next-gen consoles are capable of. But it was Turn 10's expertise in crafting gorgeous lumps of automotive loveliness in Forza Motorsport 5 that really caught our eye, with the stunning Prague track caressing our eyeballs as sunlight bounced off the shiny paintwork of our Pagani Huayra. Yes, it's still missing weather effects and night racing (and it really shouldn't be missing those things in this day and age) but screw it. Forza 5 looked fugging majestic.

	Winner – Forza Motorsport 5

	Disappointment of the Show

Oh dear. Just when we thought Crytek would bring Ryse back with a bang, Ryse: Son of Rome looks like it could be a massive waste of space. Once upon a time, the game in which you play as a Roman Centurion was supposed to be Kinect's great white hope, but based on its big reveal at E3, we could be looking at a very pretty, but ultimately vacuous button-mashing extended quick-time event in which you don't even have to press the right buttons – or any buttons for that matter – to win. Ryse: Son of Rome in its current state is a pathetic excuse for a game, devoid of any sort of meaningful gameplay whatsoever. It had more potential as a Kinect title, which is really saying something. A hack and slasher with zero depth, Crytek is going to have its work cut out convincing us that Ryse: Son of Rome is a worthwhile Xbox One title. A major disappointment.

Winner – Ryse: Son of Rome

	Surprise of the Show

Last year, Ubisoft pulled Watch_Dogs out of the bag and blew us away with an original open-world IP utterly packed with potential. And as Ubi is hard at work on delivering with Watch_Dogs, it didn't kick back and rest on its laurels for this year's E3, pulling another pleasant surprise out of the bag. The Division might be a new entry in the Tom Clancy franchise, but it's anything but the usual military shooter, packing in more than a few new ideas of its own in a near-future crisis situation that's hit the epicentre of New York City, threatening to destroy the world's society infrastructure. A dark story, spectacular visuals and some neat co-op gameplay marked out The Division as this year's clear surprise of the show. Ubisoft scores the hat trick then; first Far Cry 3, then Watch_Dogs, now this. Nice.

	Winner – The Division

Best Action Title of the Show

Netting our Surprise of the Show award last year, Watch_Dogs did a fine job in making us sit up and pay attention, and based on this year's showing of the game, we're still listening. Not only is Watch_Dogs looking like an incredibly ambitious action game with enormous scope in its open-world rendition of Chicago, but it's promising innumerable options and flexibility in the way you approach its missions, as protagonist Aiden Pearce has the ability to hack electronic systems at his fingertips. Need help from a friend? They can pitch in via their tablet in real time, or they can attempt to hack you while disguised as an anonymous pedestrian. You can do the same to them too, meaning you'll need to watch your back in Watch_Dogs. Anyone and everyone could be an enemy. If that's not exciting, we don't know what is.

	Winner – Watch_Dogs

	Best Racer of the Show

Close call. On one hand, Forza Motorsport 5 looked pretty but it's a 'business as usual' kind of racer, going from point A to point B. That's no bad thing, but The Crew is pushing the envelope massively. Strictly speaking, it's not exclusively a racing game, it's more of a driving experience, but there's no ignoring just how massive The Crew's potential is. Our hands-on highlighted that the handling model needs some attention, but it's early days yet, and given the head-spinning scale of The Crew, offering some 2000-square miles to drive through the USA's biggest cities, there was only really going to ever be one winner in this category. The Crew wins by a country mile.

	Winner – The Crew

	Best RPG of the Show

The Elder Scrolls Online is coming to consoles, South Park: The Stick of Truth still looks side-splitting, and both Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIV look exciting, but none of them can possibly hold a candle to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. With CD Projekt RED showcasing a demo in which an older, wiser Geralt embarked upon some monster hunting shenanigans, The Witcher 3 couldn't have possibly looked any more appealing if it tried. Take an already sublime RPG series, then add monster hunting and stellar next-generation visuals to the equation; and CD Projekt RED, you have yourself a sale. Damn, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt looks good. Can we have it now, please?

Winner – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

	Best Shooter of the Show

We were somewhat spoilt for choice in this category, and so heated debate was bound to ensue. We think Battlefield 4 beat Call of Duty: Ghosts in terms of spectacle, and thought that Destiny displayed an absolute ton of potential. We managed to narrow it down to a fight between EA's two biggest shooters, but which is more deserving? DICE's Battlefield 4 or Respawn's Titanfall? Halo for Xbox One might have been announced and Star Wars: Battlefront is on its way back to consoles, but we saw nothing from either game. Titanfall's fluidity of movement and moments of Battlefield-esque scale marked it out as the ultimate winner in our eyes, with the seamless transition from ground troop to hulking mech and back again the icing on the cake. You feel truly powerful in Titanfall too; the fact you can snap a man's neck when stealth killing him, and then turn his head 180-degrees just clinches the awesome.

	Winner – Titanfall

	Best Rest of the Show

Like Borderlands 2 last year, we decided that Destiny doesn't really belong in the Best Shooter category given that it's also embracing RPG and MMO elements, as well as a deep progression system. Therefore Destiny bags this here award for a number of reasons. Firstly, the sci-fi world that Bungie has crafted looks gorgeous and the characters that inhabit that world look cool as hell. Visually, Destiny wasn't the best game at E3 this year, but holy crap, some of the lighting and other visual effects blew us away. Destiny wholly deserves this award and more. Hold on a sec...

	Winner – Destiny

	Best of Show

This was a fairly close-run thing this year, with a whole bunch of games managing to wow us. Whether it was Techland's rather impressive Dying Light, Avalanche's Mad Max, Respawn's Titanfall, Ubisoft's The Division and The Crew, Eidos Montreal's Thief or Battlefield 4, there was a lot to choose from. Had we got to see some of the games announced but not actually shown at E3 (we're looking at you Mirror's Edge), it might have been a different story, but there was one game that really stood out in terms of its sheer scale and sense of ambition, taking robust first-person shooter gameplay and MMO-style progression, marrying it to some of the most jawdropping next-gen visuals we've seen to date. Bungie looks like it's on to a real winner with its first multi-format title post-Halo, meaning one game at E3 this year proved worthy of not just the Best Rest of Show award, but the Best of Show award too, which is a bit weird. Destiny looked completely, unapologetically, unashamedly stunning, putting a lot of other games like it to shame. And that's why for us, it stood out from the crowd, head and shoulders above the rest.

	Winner – Destiny

And that about does it for another year. Think we're blithering idiots who've got it completely wrong? Sound off in the comments. Also, don’t forget to check out our previews of E3's biggest games as we update the site in the coming days ahead. Keep abreast of it all in our E3 2013 hub here.

E3 2013: Top Ten Most Anticipated Games

We’ve already brought you a list of our most wanted E3 2013 game announcements, so now it’s time to look at the games we’re most looking forward to spending time with at this year’s L.A. mega-event. You know, the stuff we already know about but can't wait to see again. There’s some absolutely stonkingly huge titles in here.

Below you’ll find a list, in no particular order, of all the most exciting titles set to release over the next year or so. We’ve got sneaky stealth-em-ups, intriguing TV show/game mash-ups, huge online shooters, and a game about a fat kid from Colorado that can fart fire. Something for everything then. This is our Top Ten Most Anticipated Games of E3.

	Quantum Break

Of all the next-gen titles we've glimpsed so far, Quantum Break is without doubt the most interesting. The debut trailer mixed live-action footage featuring a creepy little psychic girl, with pre-rendered footage of a dirty great big ship crashing through a bridge, as well as what looked like third-person sections where you control a policeman of some sort. It left us with more questions than answers.

What we know for sure is that Quantum Break also has a TV series in production and "how you play the game impacts the show, and the show informs how you play the game." This is clearly a title at the very forefront of Microsoft's living room push, and with Remedy, the Finnish developers of Alan Wake, at the helm, we wouldn't bet against it being great. Hopefully E3 will help us work out exactly what the hell it is.

	Thief

We love a stealth game here at X360A, and Thief represents the daddy of them all. The original 1998 release – dreamed up and written by BioShock creator Kevin Levine – was the first 3D stealth game, the first to use shadow as a mechanic and the first to employ sound cues that could alert NPCs to players and vice versa. Hitman, Splinter Cell, Dishonored – they all owe a debt to Thief.

The return of Thief is exciting, then, and the early signs are good. When Editor Dan saw the game in action behind-closed-doors at GDC earlier this year, he was shown an uncompromisingly tough stealth experience. Thief isn't a game that allows you to shoot your way out of trouble, there are no real alternatives. In a world where such games are becoming increasingly action-orientated, that's rare. That's why we can't wait to see a little more of the next-gen Eidos Montreal reboot.

	Destiny

Everything we've seen of Destiny so far has blown our socks off. In terms of world, race and character building, it's a project of a scale we're not sure we've ever seen outside of the Mass Effect series. Mixing fantasy and sci-fi, with healthy doses of Star Wars and Halo and even a touch of Lord of the Rings, everything about it is huge. But we still haven't seen it in action.

Sure there's been concept art and a live-action/CG trailer and a bunch of stuff about the engine, but we're gagging to see a bit of gameplay. Thankfully, at E3 this year developer Bungie promises to deliver just that. Halo was massive, a system defining series for an entire platform. Destiny has the potential to be even bigger. In just a few days time, we should get our first proper look at the future.

	Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

This one has split opinion at X360A. Some of us feel that the series has been run into the ground, needlessly turned into an annual franchise and drained of any excitement. But others remember the strength of Assassin's Creed's premise and the beauty of its worlds. We're a team divided.

So with Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag we're going to give it another chance. Assassin's Creed III promised much, but didn't really live up to expectation. With the latest instalment, we're hoping that pirates, naval battles and exploration across environments as diverse as ocean, jungles, forts and ruins can breathe life into a franchise that is in danger of getting stale. Plus, there's the next-gen factor. Assassin's Creed has always been pretty. We want the Xbox One version to melt our eyeballs.

	Dragon Age III: Inquisition

Dragon Age developers BioWare have had a tough few years. Following the disappointment felt by many over Dragon Age 2, the flop that was The Old Republic, and the fan rage that surrounded Mass Effect 3's original ending, the once exalted studio has taken and few gut punches. But we fully expect them to come back fighting.

The stage is set then, for BioWare to knock us out with Dragon Age III: Inquisition. Despite their setbacks, it's a team the can stand among the very best RPG creators that the world has ever seen and we don't say that lightly. The ingredients are all there and if it all comes together DAIII could be something very special indeed. We'll be hoping to spend some time with it next week.

	Watch Dogs

An open-world; spangly future-techno gadgets; stealth; augmented reality; emergent gameplay madness; the ability to cause massive pile-ups by messing with traffic lights; the MOBILE PHONE OF DOOM. If there’s one game coming our way this year that’s right up our street, it’s Watch Dogs.

A new property from the talented chaps and chapesses at Ubisoft Montreal, with an entirely new engine built from the ground up specifically for the project, it’s a game that reeks of freshness. And at an event no doubt dominated by sequels, it could be just what we need. Watch Dogs is a franchise that promises to be around for a long time.

	South Park: Stick of Truth

Featuring old-school, turn-based RPG mechanics and Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s trademark humour (they’re writing the game), South Park: Stick of Truth may not quite have the AAA clout of some of the other games on this list, but in terms of pure fun it’s potentially right near the top.

When we spent time with Stick of Truth at last year’s E3, we were impressed enough to call it “THQ’s saving grace.” That didn’t come to pass, as THQ collapsed before the game could hit shelves, but with the Obsidian (Fallout: New Vegas) helmed project now under the wing of Ubisoft, we’re hoping it can fulfill its potential. And if you disagree? You go to hell. You go to hell and you die!

	Murdered: Soul Suspect

An intriguing mix of L.A. Noire and Capcom’s Ghost Trick, Murdered: Soul Suspect sees you take the role of detective Ronan O'Connor as he strives to solve his own murder in the historically spooky town of Salem. Aside from the fact that you play as a character acting from beyond the grave, which is pretty novel in its own right, it’s the game’s mix of evidence gathering and stealth that makes it stand out.

Throw all that together and Murdered: Soul Suspect is a massively promising title. E3 is going to be dominated by big, brash, noisy action games, but Soul Suspect is offering something different. It’s taking its influences and making something that looks and feels fresh. Early showings of the game have been impressive, so we’re keen to see more. Let’s hope it lives up to our expectations.

	The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

We love The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings. The grizzled, monster hunting Geralt is one of our favourite characters in recent years, the game’s world offers a wonderfully dark twist on fantasy staples and... well, it’s just not quite like anything else. With Wild Hunt, we fully expect CD Projekt Red to take the experience to the next level.

They’re already talking a good game. So far the Polish developer hasn’t been shy about its aspirations, promising a 50-plus hour main campaign, another 50 hours of side quests, a world bigger than Skyrim’s and an increased focus on doing what Geralt does best: slaying huge beasts. One of our most anticipated upcoming releases, we can’t wait to see more of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Now that Kojima’s fun and games surrounding the announcement of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and its voice actor are over (or are they?), we’re looking forward to finally getting a proper look at the latest in the revered series. Because let’s be clear, Metal Gear Solid games aren’t just new releases, they’re events.

Is the Fox Engine really that good? How is Kojima going to bridge the 9 year gap between the prologue and the main game? Will the tactical espionage action translate well to an open world? How will Kiefer Sutherland acclimatise to his new role? What the hell is going on with the giant flaming whale hallucinations? We’ve got plenty of questions about The Phantom Pain. Let’s hope that E3 can offer up some answers.

E3 2013: Top 10 Most Wanted Game Announcements

It’s that time again. E3 is on the horizon and this year promises to be bigger than ever. With both the Xbox 360 and the newly-unveiled Xbox One set to see a slew of announcements, we’re expecting fireworks in L.A next week. So with that in mind, here’s the latest in our annual list of most wanted announcements.

But wait. Before you scroll down, bear this in mind. Being stuck between two generations makes things a little awkward. Judging whether the games we want to see will be revealed for current or next-gen systems is tough, especially as many will be coming to both. So for now we’re sticking to just one list.

Got that? Good. Now read on.

	Half Life 3

Look, we know we always ask for it and we know it probably won’t be there, but that doesn’t stop Half Life 3 being one of our most wanted game announcements of E3 2013. Hell, it’s probably one of our most wanted games ever, such has been the wait.

With the possible exception of Half-Life 2: Episode 1, everything created by Valve starring the bespectacled Gordon Freeman has been gold. And we haven’t heard much from Gabe Newell’s crew since Portal 2, so they must be up to something. If Half Life 3 is announced at E3 next week, it’d blow our minds and the roof of the L.A. convention centre. Go on, Gabe, you know you want to.

	Fallout 4

The timing is right. Skyrim and its DLC is now a memory, new consoles are on the horizon and Bethesda is due a big new announcement. A new, cross-gen or next gen Fallout would fit the bill nicely. No wait, it’d be a megaton. Hur hur.

Fallout 3 was one of the best RPGs of this generation and Skyrim was even better. With Bethesda’s storytelling and world-building skills at their very peak, who wouldn’t be exited about a return to Fallout’s post-nuclear wasteland? Not us. Bring on the bottle caps chaps, we’re ready.

	Dead Rising 3

There’s been plenty of insider talk surrounding a next-gen Dead Rising. So much, in fact, that it’s getting hard to ignore. And while the series may have made some missteps along the way, the premise of the series is so strong that we love the idea of Capcom flexing the Xbox One’s muscles.

Whether thwapping zombies around the face with a golf club while wearing a Servbot mask, listening to scores of undead squish against the hood of your bonnet, or dealing with the series’ colourful psychopaths, the Dead Rising games have offered up plenty of memorable moments. With the right amount of invention, a next-gen sequel could be great.

	Mirror’s Edge 2

Oh, how we’ve yearned for this one. For a while, following the disappointing sales of the first game, it looked like we wouldn’t get a chance to step back into Faith’s trainers. But over the last few weeks, everything has changed. Mirror’s Edge 2 is all but confirmed and we couldn’t be more excited.

But what will this new game be? For all the adulation, Mirror’s Edge wasn’t perfect, thanks largely to some wonky and unnecessary combat. Will DICE listen to fans and give us the free-running, skyscraper-skipping game we all want? Or will we some microtransaction and assault rifle-stuffed nonsense instead? Time will tell, but until then we’ll be dreaming of a return to that glimmering city.

	Halo 5

With Halo 4, 343 Industries made its mark, taking the reigns of Bungie’s mammoth series. With Halo 5, they get to cut loose. For us, this is where the Reclaimer Trilogy really begins, and with the might of Microsoft behind them and - presumably - the power of the Xbox One at their disposal, it could be huge.

The impact of the Halo series has been eroded, with too many sequels and spin-offs. Halo: Spartan Assault shows that that trend will continue. But 343 Industries has the chance to make Halo exciting again, to make something vital and thrilling, a fitting beginning to a new generation of shooters. If they get it right, Halo 5 could ensure 343 Industries’ place in history.

	Crackdown

Remember how much fun the original Crackdown was? Liberating in a way that GTA could only dream of, it gave the player superpowers and let them loose in a vast playground of a city. And while Crackdown 2 stayed a little too close to the original, we’d love a next-gen version to recapture the magic.

This time out, however, Crackdown has more competition. Saints Row IV promises to be crazier, GTA V promises to be classier, and the PS3’s Infamous series... exists. To truly stand out, Crackdown 3 has to up its game and bring something new. We’d love it to do just that, especially with a bit of Xbone clout behind it.

	Fable IV

There have been rumblings about a new Fable game for a long time now, with numerous stories emerging about an MMO-like sequel for Microsoft’s next-gen console. Whether any of this is true or not, we don’t know. But we’d be massively surprised and disappointed if Fable doesn’t turn up in some shape or form.

It’s an interesting time for Lionhead too. Peter Molyneux has departed the company he built to make empty promises on other platforms, and the remaining talent now has everything to prove. Can Lionhead re-establish its credentials? It has one of the Xbox’s strongest properties at its disposal. Our hopes are high.

	Titanfall

With Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward re-invented shooters for a new generation and paved the way for an army of copycats. After the fallout with Activision, much of the talent behind the game moved to set up Respawn. With Titanfall, Respawn will be hoping to recreate that impact.

This list is largely full of sequels. And while we’re genuinely excited about new games in existing franchises, it’s the completely new stuff that we’re really looking forward to. These are the games that will define the next-gen in years to come, the games that will represent the very forefront of console innovation. Titanfall is well-placed to lead the charge.

	League of Legends

League of Legends is the biggest game on the planet, an all-conquering monster that has seen watered down imitations on consoles, but never the real deal. MOBA’s are huge, and if a console version can get LoL right, it could prove to be massive.

The difficulty is getting the controls right. LoL is a complicated game, with a bunch of options and menus and all the other fiddly bits associated with PC games. But if Diablo III can be made to work on a controller, so can League of Legends. We’d love to see it burst onto the scene and effectively blaze a trail for a whole new type of console game.

	Next-gen GTA V

This one’s a little more speculative. Imagine, for a second, if Rockstar had an Xbone version of Grand Theft Auto V up its sleeve. Imagine if it was a timed exclusive, with some bonus content. Imagine if it was announced on stage at during Microsoft’s E3 press conference. Imagine.

For core gamers it doesn’t get much bigger than a new Grand Theft Auto title. Even on current-gen systems, it’s the game we’re most looking forward to playing this year. An Xbone version with improved visuals would be the biggest surprise of E3, blowing everything else out of the water. Would a next-gen version of GTA V harm sales of the current-gen version? Who cares. We want it and we want it hard.

So there you have it, those are our picks for the games we would most like to see announced at E3 2013. We'd also like to see some completely new stuff come out of the woodwork and blow our socks off. But we're not psychic, unfortunately, so this'll have to do for now.
